- By: Ande, Diethard
Cambodian Postcards by S. Leblanc and Henry is volume 7 of this series. These two French working in Phnom Penh. Leblanc was a civil servant and his cards look like personal impressions with limited photographic quality. He produced two series. Henry also produced two series but more professionally It also includes articles on Mr. Beau's journey to Laos by Louis Vernet. Beau was the Governor General based in Phnom Penh and Leblanc accompanied him on his travels in Laos and most likely shot photos, but not published under his name. Mr. Beau also made a journey to Yunnan where the French had strong interest, like the Yunnan Railway Line. Those photos may have been taken also by Leblanc.
Another article covers the Moi in Cochinchina, visited by many photographers and tourists.
This article covers mainly the males while most photographers seemed to have focused more on the half nude women. It raises the question of the message of the photos. Where they meant as ethnographic representation of a minority or were they meant to arouse erotic feelings of a certain kind, as nude girls for sure do.
Seven more Barbat cards (see volume2 of this series)
Different views of history: Shades of irredentism along the Laos-Cambodian border by Ian G. Baird Discusing border problems between Cambodia and Laos were the French shifted the border arbitrarily in favor of Cambodia.
