Focusing on three landmark films, A Celestial Venice (1932), The Voice of Syama (1934), and A Siamese Journey (1937), it traces the expeditions of pioneering American travelogue filmmakers Deane Dickason, Jack Smith, and Harriet Huntington across Asia on their quests to introduce distant lands to cinema audiences back home.
Crucial Hollywood and Poverty Row networks linked these travelers with independent producers William Pizor and Tom White, future Oscar-winning cinematographer Leon Shamroy, and Siamese entrepreneur Louis Girivat, manager of the Bangkok Daily Mail.
Drawing on extensive archival research and dispersed production records, the study offers the first sustained scholarly analysis of these travelogues, reconstructing the production histories of the influential travel-film series Romantic Port O’Call and Oriental Journeys. It also examines related regional titles, including Virgins of Bali (1932), Jungle Bound (1934), Burmese Moods (1936), and Mothers of Nippon (1936), to show how independent filmmaking shaped American perceptions of Asian cultures and peoples during the interwar years.
