Four Cycles of White Lotus in Thailand
- By: Ande, Diethard
Four Cycles of White Lotus describes my working experiences in Thailand since 1970. During my studies I knew that Asia was the future. I left my first job, the German-Thai Chamber of Commerce in 1972 and established White Lotus as a trading company.
Dealing with Chinese in imports of technical items and with Indians in exports of handicrafts. The sideline of German pocket books for tourists was expanded to art books for antique dealers and collectors and gradually replaced all other items. Step two was antiquarian books and then I started publishing in 1982.
My exhibitions at international conferences of Thai, Lao, Burma, Khmer studies as well as other fields widened my views. My dealings with the business world and also Thai bureaucracy I regard as a second apprenticeship. Aspects of those observations in the different fields and contacts with a variety of people as well as cultural differences are described in a light-hearted manner.
Many of my experiences may be similar to other long term farangs living and working in Thailand
