Mekong Clash and Far East Crisis
Mekong Clash and Far East Crisis describes the 1930s and 40s a period in Thailand's history which has received somewhat less attention than most other eras. Mekong Clash and Far East Crisis is a reprint of an account originally published in August, 1941, of the events leading up to and including Thailand's brief conflict with French Indochina in late 1940 and early 1941. The events of this little-studied period culminated in Thailand's victorious occupation of portions of Cambodia and Laos, resulting in the alteration of a portion of Thailand's Indochina border. This account also details Japan's role in mediating the dispute, and the complex proceedings in Tokyo which led to the signing of a Thai-Vichy French peace treaty in May, 1941. This little-known conflict constituted an important element in Thailand's era of full national sovereignty, which began with her Revolution of 1932. An appended Introduction serves to place this recounting in the context of Thailand's previous near half-century of troubled relations with French Indochina.
