Mon Dvaravati Culture in Eastern Thailand
Mon Dvaravati Culture in Eastern Thailand - Ancient Mon Sites in the Bang Pakong River Basin is a study about the Mon Dvaravati cities and sites in this area of Mainland Southeast Asia when the ethnic Mon
people extended their habitat in the easterly direction toward the domain of the ethnic Khmer people in the 7th century AD.
The Mon people built three substantial cities in the Bang Pakong River Basin: Mueang Sri Mahosot in today’s Prachinburi province and Mueang Phra Rot and Mueang Sri Phalo in Chonburi province. They
also built the smaller towns of Mueang Dong Lakhon in the northern part of the Bang Pakong River Basin and Mueang Phaya Ray in the southern part of the basin. In addition to these cities and towns, several
smaller but important cultural Mon Dvaravati sites are also located in the area, among them Sra Morakot and Sra Siliam.
This study presents more details about the Mon people who extended their habitat eastward to open new frontiers and explore new possibilities toward the doorstep of the Khmer people’s domain. Further, it provides
narratives of how these ancient Mon Dvaravati sites still affect the lives of ordinary people in the area, whether they are ethnic Thai, Lao, Chinese, Khmer, or Mon.
The text is supported with more than 500 color images, taken between 1986 and 2024 plus maps and plans to show the locations and outlays of the sites.
