Portraits of Kings: Khmer Sculptures from 657 to 1148
Portraits of Kings: Khmer Sculptures from 657 to 1148
Khmer Sculptures from 657 to 1148: Portraits of Kings is a unique study about twelve of the 36 Khmer kings from 657 to 1120. The author continues the studies of George Coedès who in 1966 identified statues of King Jayavarman (ca. 1020 to about 1120) the builder of Bayon and many other Buddhist temples, as portraits of the king. Since then little further research in this field has been done till this new study. Coedès identified the statues mainly by the facial features and clothing, supported in some cases by the temples where they were found. But many statues had been moved to other locations. About 80% of all statues studied were equally divided by those of Jayavarman II and Suryavarman VII (reign 1120–ca. 1148). Other important statues portray the Baphuon Kings Udyavityavarman II (reign 1050–1066) and Hasharvarman III (reign 1066–1080), and the Phnom Da monarch or Jayavarman I (reign ca. 657–681), who had the earliest portrait statues made in Cambodia. Suryavarman II, as well as other kings, had also many portrait statues from his teenage years to the end of his life.
The present work, based on decades of observations of genuine statues in temples and museums throughout the world, provides a detailed account of their history. It identifies the kings they portray, and discusses their artistic, religious, and historical significance.
