Pre-Angkor Cave Temples and Other Sacred Mountain Sites in Southernmost Cambodia
Pre-Angkor Cave Temples and Other Sacred Mountain Sites in Southernmost Cambodia is a work about the oldest existing temple structures in Cambodia.
The three cave temples are called Prasat Phnom Chhngok, Prasat Phnom Totong and Prasat Phnom Khyang.
These Hindu cave temples were built during the Funan and Chenla periods in the mid-1" millennium AD, when the Khmerization of the early settlers in the area began.
They are located in modern Kampot province in the wider Mekong River Delta region, once part of the ancient Funan state.
In the past, they were off the beaten track, but since their designation as national heritage sites by the Cambodian government in 2021, they are now accessible to more adventurous visitors.
They shed new light on the ancient pre-Khmer history when Indian cultural influences were adopted by the multi-ethnic people who lived in this part of Southeast Asia.
Despite their antiquity and historical and religious significance, the cave temples were neglected in most scholarly studies of the area.
The content of this book is supported by more than 300 images and drawings, plus maps and plans of the sites.
