Lao Postcards by De Sesmaisons, Old Postcard Series, Vol.6: Laos
Lao Postcards by De Sesmaisons, Old Postcard Series, Vol.6: Laos
- By: Ande, Diethard
LAO POSTCARDS BY DE SESMAISONS is volume 6 of the Old Postcard Series on Laos. This volume covers only one publisher/photographer: Philippe de Sesmaisons. He published more Lao postcards than any other photographer or publisher.
He is, besides Alfred Raquez, the most important photographer in Laos at that time after 1900. He made 288 postcards of Laos. The other 322 cards of his total work of 611 cards are on Yunnan, Cambodia and Vietnam. They were published by L'Union Commerciale Indochinoise. starting with # 400 and with Yunnan cards, continued by Vietnam and Cambodian cards. His Lao cards start with #607 till #826, continued again by Yunnan cards from #827 to # 942, and ended with Lao cards up to #1011. Yunnan, Vietnam and Cambodia are only listed as far as I got them. Too many are still missing for another volume. Hopefully other collectors may finish to complete de Sesmaisons' postcard corpus one day.
De Sesmaisons was in Laos at the same time as Raquez and they often travelled together, documented in some of the cards. His cards are stylistically quite different from Raquez cards. They look more like photos from a traveler to record all places or events he has seen without focusing on details. Although produced at the same time as Raquez cards, they look more like pre 1904 cards.
